Solar Re-roofing Scheme for Denbighshire Council

Solar Re-roofing Scheme for Denbighshire Council

Denbighshire Council are one of the first to pilot a pioneering full solar & roof system specification.

The specification is for a combined roofing system with in-roof solar was used on 110 homes to help reduce maintenance costs and help tenants cut energy bills.

For Denbighshire County Council, roof refurbishment is an important part of their external major repairs programme and energy efficiency improvements for its older properties.

Denbighshire Council specified a complete pitched roof system with solar, which included single camber clay tiles, red battens, underlay, dry fix, fittings and in-roof tiles all backed with a 15-year guarantee and technical support.

Bringing the roofs up to modern standards and being cost effective whilst retaining the original aesthetic of the homes was a huge challenge.

The council’s necessity for a low-maintenance pitched roof solution was paramount. The roofing solution needed to minimise maintenance costs and reduce the probability of future repairs. In addition, the new roofing system had to have like-for-like clay tile replacement and incorporate solar technology that would give the council’s social housing stock a better Energy Performance rating, with a minimum of Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) C and help the council’s tenants cut their energy bills.

The new roofing system was successfully installed and Councillor Rhys Thomas, representing Denbighshire County Council, said “This project has really helped make our council homes more energy efficient in times of rising fuel and energy costs, and is giving residents more control over the electricity bills.”

Our solar panels can be used as stand-alone panels or as part of a complete roofing system on both new build and refurbishment projects – helping local authorities to meet forthcoming Part L carbon reduction targets and cut tenants’ energy bills by up to £260 per year.

If you are a social housing provider, we can support you with:

  • Surveys on your social housing stock to determine the sustainability on Solar PV with the ambition of improving the EPC ratings for your properties, in line with government requirements.
  • Providing in-depth calculations of the kilowatt output to demonstrate the potential benefits tenants could receive by installing solar PV.
  • Producing detailed NBS specifications to be used by architects and other building professionals to outline the products and standards of a project, to ensure the smooth installation of the roofing and in-roof solar system.
