Cement ingredients:

Limestone (Calcium Carbonate): Limestone is the primary source of calcium in cement production. It provides the essential calcium component needed for the chemical reaction during cement formation.

Clay or Shale (Silicon, Aluminium, Iron Oxides): Clay or shale provides the necessary silica (SiO2), alumina (Al2O3), and iron oxide (Fe2O3) content. These elements are critical for the formation of the cement clinker during the high-temperature process.

Gypsum (Calcium Sulphate): Gypsum is added to regulate the setting time of the cement. It helps control the rate of hydration, preventing the cement from setting too quickly.

Other Additives: Depending on the desired properties, various additives can be included in cement production. These may include fly ash, slag, or natural pozzolans, which can enhance specific characteristics of the cement, such as durability, workability, or reduced environmental impact.

The Cement is produced by heating a mixture of the above materials to high temperatures, resulting in clinker. Which is then finely ground to produce the cement powder.

When mixed with water, cement undergoes a chemical reaction called hydration, forming a gel-like substance that binds aggregates together to create strong and durable structures.

FAQs

What is the difference between cement and concrete?

Cement is an ingredient used to make concrete. Concrete is a mixture of cement, aggregates (such as sand and gravel), water, and sometimes additional additives. Cement acts as the binding agent that holds the concrete components together.

Is cement environmentally friendly?

Cement production can have environmental impacts due to the energy-intensive process and carbon dioxide emissions. However, efforts are being made to develop more sustainable cement formulations and reduce emissions.
