Timber Cladding

Protect façades with timber cladding

As the name implies, timber cladding is a method that generally involves boards or planks of timber that overlap each other to act as a shield and is utilised to clad buildings or establishments to create a more beautiful finish.

This durable siding is designed to have a cavity between it and the main wall, so that if any moisture penetrates the cladding, it has a chance to evaporate or drain away, so technically, it is meant to protect the walls against moisture and the penetration of air.

Laker supply three types of cladding that are the most popular to use in the UK.

Shiplap Cladding: This type of cladding is a traditional style of timber cladding with a smooth finish and an overlapping or interlocking edge detail to create a waterproof façade. What differentiates shiplap cladding profiles from others is a wide 'scoop' on the top edge of each board instead of a shadow gap. Shiplap’s wooden panels overlap in such a way that the flat surface created is much more weather resistant than the overlap construction method.

Tongue and groove: Often referred to as T&G, this cladding is manufactured with a type of joint in which one board features a groove (or slot) and another board features a corresponding tongue that ‘lock’ together. The tongue and groove boards fit perfectly together vertically or horizontally – via these interlocking ridges or hollows.

Featheredge Cladding: Featheredge cladding offers a distinct rustic and traditional appearance designed to be thicker at one end and taper down to a thinner edge. Unlike shiplap or tongue and groove cladding, featheredge boards do not interlock with each other. Instead, they are laid starting from the bottom, with the wider edge of each board positioned at the bottom, the narrower edge then sits under the wider edge of the board above it.

FAQs

Can I use paint on cladding?

Our cladding can be painted or stained as you prefer.

Can I jetwash cladding?

Some types of cladding withstand jet washing more than others, for example, tongue and groove cladding has been pressure treated and the interlocking construction method helps prevent water ingress.

What is wooden cladding used for?

Most commonly wood cladding is used outside on garden buildings such as sheds.
